2024-2025 Kohlmeier Mikulencak Scholarship Recipients

The 2024 scholarship is awarded to Aiden Ochoa, Eva Rodriguez, Remi Rogoff, and Hanna Wiczek. They show resilience, compassion, and care in advocating for others, taking personal risks that make them vulnerable in the process of building more just and equitable communities. Through the creation of dialogue between groups, they are affecting positive change, and we applaud their unwavering commitment to advocating for trans, gender, and disability rights. Aiden, Eva, Remi, and Hanna: Congratulations on finding your voices as you become compassionate leaders for structural change!

Aiden Ochoa

I'm a political science major and in the process of declaring a creative writing minor as well. I applied to the scholarship because I believed my ideals and general life goals aligned with the spirit of the scholarship. After graduating from Western, I plan to go to law school with a concentration on constitutional law. Eventually, I hope to go into politics and, with all the knowledge my education has afforded me, work towards making life better for marginalized Americans. I want to better the quality of life for people like and people like my family who belong to low-income, POC communities who need help but have rarely received it from the people in power.

I am currently still undecided about my major, but I am interested in science, studying people, and art. I applied to this scholarship because I believe learning about crimes against humanity is important. With what I learn from my time at Western I hope to contribute to the continuing effort in society to make everyone equal.

I am a third year Urban Planning and Sustainable Development major with minors in Critical Disability Studies and Honors Interdisciplinary Studies. I applied to the Kohlmeier Mikulencak Scholarship in Honor of Holocaust Survivor Arthur Poznanski because I feel that my goals to make the world a more accessible and inclusive place aligned with the question for the scholarship's essay. I hope to continue my work in urban planning and disability communities to make sure everyone is welcome and has a place in our environments.

Hanna Wiczek

My name is Hanna Wiczek. This fall I will be starting my third year at Western. I am pursuing a degree in biochemistry with a minor in Spanish. I applied for the Kohlmeier Mikulencak Scholarship because I saw it as an opportunity to aid my pursuit of medical school and eventually allow me to help traumatic brain injury patients. Once I graduate from WWU, I plan to go to medical school and conduct research on how the presence of varying amounts of hormones affects patients who sustain traumatic brain injuries. My overarching goal is to use my acquired tools and experience to improve the quality of life of those who suffer from traumatic injuries. I believe in using my agency to help people both in medical and social settings. When I am not juggling my classwork, I enjoy anything outside; I love hikes, skiing, running, and the Salsa and Bachata Club at Western.
